Digital Citizenship...For Grown-Ups

Technology infusion is one of the seven primary goals at Cranston School. A vehicle that stimulates student interest in learning, technology provides easier access to gathering and organizing information, synthesis, comparison and analysis of information and provides multiple forms of representation for sharing of knowledge with audiences. At Cranston School, we work hard to ensure students have access to, and develop strong skills in using, a wide array of technological tools to enhance their learning and understanding. Technology available to every child includes ipod touches, ipads, Smartboards, laptop computers, desktop computers, Nanos, listening centres, videoconferencing and various software programs. It is the mission of the CBE to help students become safe, savvy, and responsible digital citizens from Kindergarten - grade 12 and into adulthood. We aim to help our students communicate, function, and create change on local, national, and global levels, in ways that are responsible and respectful of others. The use of digital devices throughout the learning process, with teacher support and careful supervision, provides opportunities for students to practice digital citizenship in contexts that mirror real life.

Cranston's Learner accessible wireless network

Cranston's Learner Accessible Wireless NetworkThe Learner Accessible Wireless Network (LAWN) is in use at Cranston School. This system allows students and visitors who bring wireless devices to school to connect to our wireless network. It also allows our iPod Touches and iPads to connect to the network and expands the possibilities for using the devices in the classroom. The purpose of the LAWN is to support teaching and learning and to allow opportunities for students to personalize their learning environment, using the tools available to them. Students are not required to bring devices from home, but are welcome to do so based on familial consideration. Cranston School has a wide range of technology for students to use and share. If families do wish to have students bring their own devices to be used in school, they must complete a Family Contract and return to their teacher before this can happen.A copy of the Digital Citizenship letter and Family Contract is available on our website under the heading “Digital Citizenship” on the left hand side of the page. We encourage all families to please read through the digital citizenship contract with your children, discuss the contract with their children and return the signed contract to the school, even if your child is not ready to bring their own personal device to school. This will help build awareness of digital citizenship expectations and strategies for all Cranston school families. If you do not have a copy of the letter and contract, you can download it from the link below. Links also take you to the CBE policy page on digital citizenship and the FAQ.
